Chambourcin
Picking from the Vine Step 1
Rob Cutting Full Lug of Grapes
The vineyard we selected was located in Landenberg PA, "PARADOCX". They have an abundant selection of varietal grapes, some of which they open for public picking. Chambourcin was on the list of Vines that we could purchase our grapes from.
Shown here Dave & Rob find select areas to prune our grapes from. This section of the vineyard was all ours, just us and the grapes. I purchased 4 lugs weighing in at approximately 25 to 30 pounds each lug. I have to say that October is the perfect time to pick this variety.
Cindy Cutting Grapes Vines 05
Cindy also was pruning and cutting the clusters of these beautifully perfect late October grapes. This particular vineyard is about 10 years old with some very healthy vines.
We found areas between the rows of vines loaded with fresh fruit. We couldn't help but to taste a few samples. Chambourcin grapes are thick skinned and very sweet which made the brix level upward to the mid 20's. Ideal for winemaking.
Vines 06 Closeup Vines
Wondering around and just in awe of the healthy and abundant selection, it seemed that everywhere we turned there was fresh fruit to prune. Chambourcin grapes are dark purple in color and produce a wine similar to Zinfandel and Pinot Noir. that is the best description I can give. Although if you have ever tasted Chambourcin it is unlike anything you ever tried. Smooth, Dry, Fruity, with a wonderful finish.
